What is a Limited Edition Print?

Limited Edition Prints are produced in finite quantities, the amount of prints available in the Edition is determined by the artist / photographer. Once the edition of prints has sold out, they will no longer be available to purchase as an official Edition Print of that exact type.

Limited Edition Prints are therefore numbered this letting you know, the specific print issued.

Dean Chalkley’s Limited Edition Prints are signed, numbered and come with a certificate of authenticity.

What is an Artist Proof?

When a photographer/artist releases a new image as a Limited Edition Print, test prints are made, often in different sizes or on different types of paper. These pre-edition prints are known as Artist Proofs (AP) or in some cases, Printer’s Proofs (PP).

The photographer/artist generally allows approximately 10% of an edition to be the additional Artist Proofs i.e. If the edition is 20 then there will be 2 Artist Proofs. However, the number of AP’s may vary but will be stated at the incorporation of the edition. An SP (Special Proof) is a one-off print given to the subject/s in the photograph.

Are the prints enhanced from the original?

Images that originate from film are made by scanning the original transparency or negative at high resolution. The digital files are then cleaned and dusted and may be colour balanced or retouched, according to the photographer/art director's instruction.

Images taken on digital cameras skip the scanning process but the rest of the process is the same.

How are the images printed?

Prints are made on several different paper stocks and print processes. For a full description and further insight into the process, please visit the Maker Page.

How do I take care of my print?

To conserve your print it should be mounted with acid-free, museum standard materials and framed using UV glass or Perspex. Keep your print out of direct sunlight and away from unusually hot cold or damp conditions.

Is there a framing option?

Framing is a subjective decision with many variables. We therefore do not offer a framing service. However, we recommend The Print Space mounting and framing department for a bespoke service.
