Here’s Cush Jumbo as Hamlet by William Shakespeare directed by Greg Hersov at the Young Vic Theatre photographed by Dean.

‘Shakespeare wrote no other male character like Hamlet,’ Cush Jumbo says. ‘He wrote “a new man” and I think today we are still questioning what it is to be that man, to be any man in fact.’

What it means to be a man theme connects directly with The Book of Man: Looking for men  work and exhibition that Dean did for the PPA award winning publication The Book of Man last March.

Cush will play Hamlet at London’s Young Vic in 2020. Ophelia and Gertrude are the main female characters in Hamlet but, as The Guardian mentions, female actors have taken on the lead role itself including Asta Nielsen, Frances de la Tour and Maxine Peake.

Cush Jumbo is a British Actress and Writer best known for playing Lucca Quinn in The Good Wife and The Good fightShe was awarded the OBE in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to Drama.

She was Olivier nominated for the role of Marc Anthony in Phyllida Lloyd's all female production of Julius Caesar (Donmar Warehouse/St Anns Warehouse NYC) and won an Evening Standard Award for writing and starring in Josephine and I, a one woman show about the black performer Josephine Baker.

Kwame Kwei-Armah’s new dynamic creative direction at The Young Vic is championing cultural inclusion and pioneering its reach impact and education work in London.

Public booking opens Tuesday 25 June 2019 at 12pm for Hamlet  from 6 Jul 2020 - 22 Aug 2020.
