The Bleeding Heart project was inspired by singer songwriter Joseph Arthur. I had been aware of his music for a while, in fact I think I saw him at one of his first UK appearances at the Metro Club in Oxford Street London. His music is very emotional and conjures up deep and often dark feelings. I listened to the recording of one of his shows repetitively in my car for weeks as I drove around the often dark night time London streets. Joseph’s composition Mercedes was one track that stood out above all the rest, it is so poignant and something inside me connected with it. The words punctured right through my shell and hit a fleshy part of my soul. I knew I had to make a project based around it. Mercedes is all about relationships, love and loss. I contacted Joseph and asked him if he would write out the opening few lines of the song in his own handwriting this would be the ‘Manifesto’, the dictate of the photographic series. I was incredibly pleased when Joseph faxed me several versions of the lyrics some incorporating decorative illustrations.
